In the morning, your Chinese-speaking driver and guide will meet you at the designated point before departing for the historic gold mining town of Sovereign Hill, located about 112 kilometres from Melbourne. Along the way, enjoy the scenic drive passing Brown Hill and Ravenhall Nature Reserve.
Upon arrival, step back in time to the 19th century. Sovereign Hill is brought to life by more than 150 staff dressed in period costume, recreating the golden days of Australia’s gold rush era. The streets are lined with authentic shops, blacksmiths, bakeries, general stores, restaurants, and old-fashioned pubs. You’ll even see horse-drawn carriages and costumed riders adding to the charm of the town.
Guests will take part in the fascinating “Underground Mine Adventure Tour”, riding a mine cart through a 600-metre tunnel, 180 metres underground, to experience how miners once searched for gold in the dimly lit passageways. Afterwards, witness a captivating gold-smelting demonstration that brings the history of Ballarat’s gold rush to life.
Following the Goldfields experience, the afternoon itinerary will vary depending on available time. During the summer season, we’ll make a stop at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens and Lake Wendouree for sightseeing.
Lake Wendouree is a beautiful, expansive lake located in the heart of Ballarat. The walking and cycling paths surrounding the lake are popular with locals and families, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot the area’s famous black swans gliding along the water.
Beside the lake lies the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, established in 1857 and recognised as Victoria’s oldest inland botanical garden. Spanning 40 hectares, it features four main sections — the central gardens, the open northern and southern gardens, and the Lake Wendouree area — all filled with lush greenery and vibrant blooms throughout the year.
The tour concludes around 6:00pm as we return to Melbourne city.
